Level 1
A zoetrope rotated using a hand-crank arouses static images of Candida albicans cells, which come alive, dancing and changing shape. The viewer observes the contained images from a safe distance, completely in control – a stark contrast with the unruly contamination of Ereignis, Gelassenheit und Lichtung. The simplicity of the analogue apparatus materialises the gaps in seeing between scales and explores the role of motion in seeing and knowing an Other.
